Best Time to Visit Mongolia: Seasons, Sacred Windows and Festivals
November 2, 2026
When to travel to Mongolia: spring birch sap, summer in the taiga and the Altai, golden autumn with eagle hunters - and what each season feels like.
A land of four strong seasons
Mongolia has a dry, continental climate with more than 250 sunny days a year. Summers are short and bright, winters long and very cold. Most journeys happen between May and October, and each month offers something different.
May - spring awakening
Spring is fresh, windy and quiet, with few visitors. It is the short window when birch trees give their sap, a tradition of renewal that our Birch Sap retreat is built around. Nights are still cold, so warm layers are needed.
June to August - the green season
Summer brings green valleys, long days and the warmest weather. It is the best time for the northern taiga and the Tsaatan reindeer herders, for high Altai hikes, and for warm sand sessions in the Gobi. Short rain showers are common in July and August, and mountain nights stay cool.
September and October - golden autumn
Autumn turns the steppe gold and the air becomes crisp and clear. It is the season of the eagle-hunting gatherings of the Mongolian Kazakh families in the far west, and a beautiful time for the desert. Expect frost at night.
Choosing your time
Ask yourself what you are looking for: renewal in spring, deep nature and community in summer, or clear light and tradition in autumn. Each of our journeys is planned around the season that suits it best.
